Managing product categories is one of the Odoo 17 POS’s key features. Products are arranged in the POS interface using a special type of category known as POS categories.  

They can be hierarchical, allowing you to stack categories within each other. This will enable you to organize your products in a logical and user-friendly way. 

This strategy allows products to be logically organized into categories such as ‘food,’ ‘drink,’ ‘clothing,’ and so on. Consequently, you’ll have an easier time finding what you’re looking for. 

Certain features are connected with the POS product categories. Create a category, then limit it.

When a new POS session is created in Odoo 17, a random start category is selected. If no start category is set, all products will be available throughout the session. 

A retailer might create a core category for its best-selling products. This will help them save time and money and make it easier to find what they are looking for. 

This indicates that the ‘Desks’ starting category was selected. Let us now begin the session and examine how the first category operates.

When the session begins, the products will be listed in the initial category selected during setup. 

Also, as seen in the figure above, you can alter the start category by clicking on the Home sign. Lowering the clicks and keystrokes required to locate and select products increases POS efficiency. 

Let us now analyze the restriction categories. To do so, select a few categories from the configuration settings to display during the Point of Sale session.

As you can see, the categories ‘Desk’, ‘Misc’, and ‘Chairs’ have been picked. Other categories are so obscured for the duration of the Point of Sale. This means that when accepting orders, staff members will be unable to select products from the prohibited categories.

Other categories are restricted, and we limited ourselves to the three categories specified in the session setting. 

Restricted categories are an effective tool for inventory management since they allow you to exclude out-of-stock products from the category. Employees will be unable to sell unavailable products as a result of this category.
