The time required to complete a process is known as Lead time. Odoo provides three lead times, Customer lead time, Delivery lead time, and manufacturing lead time. The time users require to get a product to the customer is known as the ‘Customer lead time.'
The time required to get a product from a specific vendor is known as the delivery lead time or vendor lead time. Manufacturing lead time refers to the required to manufacture a product. To avoid delays, a security lead time can be added to the lead times.
How the Manufacturing lead time works?
Choose a product to use for that. A table has been created for this instance. This product can be kept, but it is currently out of stock. The product’s inventory tab may indicate the lead time for manufacturing. The production lead time is specified at 5 days in this example. The customer lead time for the product table is also fixed to ten days.
The smart tab the Bill of Material displays the materials prepared for the production of this product. Check out the smart tab to see the created BoM. Click on a smart tab to open it. The BoM includes a list of the components and methods needed to create a table. The user can also create a new Bill of Materials using the manufacturing module.
For example: A consumer orders a product table, and the user needs to replenish the product due to a lack of supply. Enable the Manufacturing and Replenish on Order (MTO) routes on the product tab.
Lead Time
Let us build a sales proposal for the Table product. Azure Interior is the chosen customer in this case. It will also include the customer’s address. Choose ‘Confirm’ from the options.
Two smart tabs appear after the order has been confirmed. One is a manufacturing order, while the other is a delivery order. Before delivering the products, the user must complete the production process and update the product table. Select the Manufacturing order first.
The production order is formed on the Bill of Materials. Check the manufacturing process’s start and end dates. The scheduled date is July 15th. This is 5 days after the order was created. Users can complete the Manufacturing and Operations steps and mark the button as Done.
Return to the sales order page and choose the Delivery option. The product has been reserved for delivery. The delivery date, July 20th, has been set aside. Since the customer lead time of 10 days has been set. As a result, delivery will take place 10 days after the order was placed.

Security Lead Time
To prevent production delays, the security lead time is added. If a security lead time is applied to the goods, the production order will be booked sooner, reducing the possibility of a late delivery. The Odoo 16 Manufacturing module’s configuration settings allow you to add the security lead time for production.
Enable the security Lead time option and specify the number of days. The lead time for security has been added here for two days. Save the settings, and repeat the process once more.
Create a new sales order for the table product with a 5-day production lead time. After you’ve selected the customer, add the product to the order line. Verify the order.
As previously mentioned, an order for manufacturing and delivery will be placed. Check the production order before delivery, as the product can only be refilled after it is manufactured.
Launch the production order. This instance uses the same Bill of Materials as the preceding one. However, the scheduled date indicated that manufacturing will commence on July 13th.
The product table has a production lead time of 5 days. In this case, the security lead time is set to two days, even though manufacturing should be scheduled for 5 days after the development date. As a result, production begins two days before the scheduled date.
Finally, production is a time-consuming process. As a result, the Lead Time and Security Lead Time help the user schedule manufacture, improving company functionality.
